There are certain things that are bound to change, but many try to remain the same. Venicle Vypaari, the latest Mammootty starrer directed by Shafi is one such thing which boasts of a lot of changes with different vignettes, but enroots the twists and turns it also rather become predictable except for some hilarious sequences.
Pavithran (Mammootty), a constable in a police station in Alappuzha, is sent to investigate the murder of a local coir worker Ajayan (Biju Menon). As some of the cops who had gone there for investigation were brutally manhandled by the powerful landlords in the area, Pavithran disguises himself as a coir trader. Some smart moves later, he becomes a rich businessman and quits his job as a constable. Ammu (Kavya Madhavan), who incidentally is Ajayan’s sister, falls in love with Pavithran.
With several characters, plots and sub plots which are packed pretty neatly, the story develops in a gripping manner. But things get annoying after a while as the incidents move ahead without any surprises. The repeated attempts to boost the hero make the proceedings quite melodramatic as well and the old fashioned narrative doesn’t help matters either. Shamdutt’s camera and Bijibal’s music are fine.
The pace of the film is what that sets you in with a firmly simple but engaging storyline with a sensitive flair. The cast and the crew will have definite say in the proceedings of the film which in all probabilities may end the drought of hits for the last few months for Mammootty films. The major area of disapproval may be the climax sequences and all else is well paced, said and performed.
Venicle Vyapaari may not be a great film, but it is an enjoyable one with drama, action, comedy, sentiments et al in the right dosage. The major attraction is that the film does not bore you. Mammootty gives a good performance as Pavitran, while Kavya Madhavan is good as Ammu. Jagathi, Sailimkumar , Poonam, Vijaya Ragjavan, and Janardanan do justice to their roles. Suraj, who plays pavitran's constant companion, is brilliantly funny.
James Albert has done a tight script, adding in right measure all the ingredients that go to make a commercially successful film. Cinematographer Shyam Datt and Music Bijipal have given ample support to the Director. All in all, it is a film worth watching especially for a family audience.
Verdict:Family Entertainer
