‘Urumi’ was the most anticipated movie right from the day of its launch because of the theme- the boy who wanted to kill Vascodagama. Being produced by August Cinemas in which Pritviraj & Santhosh Sivan are also part of, Urumi is being taken on a grand scale and can be counted as one of the costliest film ever in Malayalam cinema.

It’s a historical epic which takes us back to 15th century when Vascodagama landed in Kerala and how that entry impacted to the lives of people.  Urumi’s basic storyline revolves around Kelu(Pritviraj) who wants to seek vengeance against Vascodagama and there is Vavvali(Prabhu Deva) and Arakkal Ayesha(Genelia) who are there as warriors to help Kelu to carry out his revenge.

What makes Urumi work is undoubtedly is Santosh Sivan’s brilliance as a cinematographer and Sankar Ramakrishnan’s catchy dialogs. Apart from staying behind the camera alone, Santosh Sivan has done enough homework to neatly direct the movie also. Sankar Ramakrishnan’s scripting is fine and he could have done better in the screenplay part as second half lacked continuity at the beginning but well written dialogs made it up.

Pritviraj can be proud of producing such a landmark movie and his giant looks, action sequences, controlled acting were the highlights from this acting part. But he still needs to improve in voice modulation while delivering dialogs in such historical movies. Prabhu Deva was the surprise package and he came up with an all-around performance in acting, comedy, fights and romance.

Genelia will never forget her entry to Malayalam film industry and Arakkal Ayesha will be remembered as the most challenging character she had ever portrayed. It needed skills and sincere dedication and hardwork to learn and perform Kalaripayitu after playing cute romantic roles right from her debut in Boys. Nitya Menon, Jagathy and the ones who played Vascodagama’s son and Chirakkal thampuran came up with notable performances.

Deepak Dev’s music was fine with ‘Aaro ne aaro’ being the pick of the lot, but his background score was awesome throughout and made certain scenes to feel the thrill. Tabu appears in just a song while Vidya Balan also does the same along with making her presence in a few scenes. Both cameos were not impressive while the cameo from Tamil actor Arya struck the viewers attention.

With close to 3 hours of duration, Urumi is not the typical entertainer for the common audience but if you are lover of good films, then this is your cup of tea.

Verdict:Visual Treat
