Malayalam cinema gets yet another police saga with "The Thriller: The Thrill Unlimited", the new offering from B.Unnikrishnan-Prithviraj team.
Though billed as a "Thriller" B.Unnikrishnan film, it offers the same fare as an above average film of this genre. Be sure, however, that this 14-reeler is entertaining if not riveting.
Thriller is based on the Paul Muthoot murder case which has been in the news for more than six months. The story is usually about an officer of police single-handedly taking on the vicious nexus of politician, land mafia, high-ranking police officers and street goons. Prithviraj plays the role of a top police officer, DGP Niranjan IPS, who investigates the mysterious death of a young man Simon Palathinkal son of business tycoon Joseph Palathinkal from a prominent business family in Kerala.
Though there is no particular novelty in terms of storyline and all the characterizations and incidents deployed in the narrative are clichéd and predictable, there is still enough sparkle in the movie. B.Unnikrishnan has packed it in an interesting and logical manner so that practically, there is not a dull moment in the screenplay.
Prithviraj impresses as Niranjan IPS. His stylistic performance looks attractive. The only point he should be careful about is his dialogue delivery because his voice seems to tear off when he has to deliver loud monologues. Others of the cast, including heroine Katherine Theresa, have little scope to show their histrionic capabilities. They have to be either very loud or extraordinarily subdued. Veteran actor Siddique has done his role admirably. Sampath's villainy is convincing. Dharam's music, as usual, is subtle and soothing. Bharani K. Dharan extraordinary Cinematography stands out, occupying a major part of the screenplay.
Songs act as speed breakers in this thrilling movie. We could hear a sigh in unison from the audience whenever the actors broke into a song. on the whole, however, while not a spellbinder like Suresh Gopi's "Commissioner", the film is still thrill to worth watching once. .
Verdict: Thrilling
