'Swa Le', cinematographer turned director P. sukumar first film starring Dileep and Gopika, is a marked departure from his kind of filmmaking. He predominantly makes different approach movie but here he has tried to widen his scope. The end result though is utterly disappointing.

The story is about a a local journalist, who is always forced to work overtime by his new hungry editor and bureau chief. He even doesn't gets enough time to look after his pregnant wife. After reading Unni's reports, many has advised him to try for bigger jobs in bigger newspapers of the town. But due to some reasons like homesickness, he likes to stick to his little newspaper originating from his hometown. The life of Unni takes a sea change following the arrival of a bunch of journalists from the city to his village, to report the death of Palazhy Sankara Pillai, a well known literary figure in the state. Sankara Pillai was the man who led Unni to the professional merits and ethics of journalism. But even amidst the intense grief of the death, Unni is forced to make lengthy obituaries about the man, whom he always considered as a fatherly figure. The film follows the incidents that forces Unni to take a different stand and make a different look at his profession.

Kalavoor Ravikumar tries hard to layer the story with issues ranging from human trafficking to alienation and belonging but cannot carry the juggling act successfully. Dileep perfectly full justice to his respective role and Gopika with a convincing act in her role as Vimala, Gopika  is mature beyond her age. Innocent, Jagathy Sreekumar, Nedumudi Venu does their part well .Salimkumar, Ashokan has once again repeated his usual stuffs.

Technically, the film offers the best visuals seen in Malayalam cinema in recent times. director Sukumar him self captures the spirit of the village in every frame. M.Bawa's art-direction and V.Saajan's editing have all been handled in a very good method as is demanded by the focus.

All in all, Swa Le is a  realistic movie, Which failed to convert a better one.

Verdict: Different Attempt
