Salt N Pepper -Review

Salt and Pepper directed by Ashiq Abdul tries to explore the strength of relationships with food as its framework. Kalidasan (Lal) is an archaeologist by profession. He is also a foodie who is hell bent in believing food can be the trump card to solve anything in life. Maya (Shwetha Menon) is a young dubbing artiste. Maya and Kali bump into each other in an interesting situation.
Maya makes a call to a local dosa take out joint and ends up dialling Kali’s number. After a long chat, annoyed Kali starts hating Maya. But their interaction on phone continues. Slowly knowing about each other they both begin to like each other. They decide to meet in person. But at the last moment Kali decides to send his nephew Manu (Asif Ali) as his representative to Maya. When Maya’s friend Meenakshi (Mythili) wants to butt in Maya also agrees.
After this point the film’s story takes a backseat and food takes over. In anticipation to see each other, Kalidasan and Maya bake a Joan’s Rainbow cake (originally made by a French army man’s wife during her wait for her husband from war), Kali tastes the Unniappam made by Babu (Baburaj), Maya brings a hot plate of banana chips, Manu and Meenakshi fall in love sipping a frothy cappuccino, a gentleman ambles on about the taste of a hot cuppa of chai, even the underhand at Maya’s office talks about the drumstick sambar and so on.
Story is the hero of the film. It brings out the middle class values and attitude well. Everyone in the cast including Lal, Shwetha Menon, Mythili, Asif have given adequate performance. Shyju khalid’s camera does wonders capturing the lip smacking food and also the scenic background around. Biji Bal and Avial band’s music, Sameera Saneesh’s colur combination, Shyam Pushkaran, Dileep Nair and Ashiq Abdul’s direction all make the movie worth watching.
