Sagar Alias jacky -Review
By Cine Critic | 28 Saturday March, 2009

An average cine-viewer perceives an action-thriller to be filled with machismo galore. A hero that bashes up all those who come up against him. If it’s a theme on the underworld, you have an anti- hero that finds moral values in his illegal dealings. He has to face villains at every turn, but comes triumph in his mission. The traditional concept of heroism is intact in this new Amal Neerad venture, without any twist or turns, giving the audience absolutely nothing to rave about.

Story starts with kidnapping of the CM’s (Nedumudi Venu) son-in-law Manu (Manoj K. Jayan), his wife Indu(Shobhana) has no other option rather than to rely upon Manu's friend Sagar Alias Jacky (Mohanlal) to save her husband. Sagar is now a dominant throughout the middle east and outsmarts under world Don Naina(Suman), and he is only happy to help his friend and here comes Jacky to Goa. Here starts Jacky's new mission, his enmity with Rosario brothers. From here onwards reloaded Sagar is triggering on his new mission. But there is hardly anything to be thrilled or fascinated.

What you are expecting from Sagar is to outplay his enemies like what he did in his first outing in Irupatam Noottandu with cute smile, gentle look; sharp intelligence mixed together with the natural talent of Lal. But this time, the new Sagar looks like an alien who posses’ modern sophisticated weapons, but surely lacks the punch and thrill.Amal is mocking at crowd by presenting Sagar as a super human and no wonder sometimes our reloaded Jacky even resembles what Antonio Banderas did in his masterpiece movie Desperado.

Imitating the style from western movies will not do anything good to Malayalam cinema since the audience will always look for the substance rather than in its presentation. Amal was much appreciated for his first venture by its novelty even though it was a pure adoption from a Hollywood thriller. That movie was a new experience for Malayalam cinema, when it comes to Sagar, director tried to recreate Bilal John Kurishinkal. May be Sagar would have been much appreciated if it was Amal’s first directorial venture.

When you look at the other departments, fight sequences supervised by Amal Arasu is really top notch. Background score done by Gopi Sunder, cannot be better than this and costumes designed by Praveen Varma also deserve a special mention and superb camera work done by the director himself. Even with these sorts of technical perfections why this movie is not evoking an overall positive response and that is the question which is to be discussed. Definitely when the die-hard fans are considered, their hero is back, but it raises so many questions that are exactly opposite to the movie's tagline.

And finally, a simple note to Amal and Mohanlal: The Style quotient is not enough to propel a movie. It also needs substance
Verdict:Timepass
