Director Shafi made his debut with the evergreen family hero ‘Jayaram’ around 10 years back in ‘One Man Show’. Even though it did not went on to make a huge success, Shafi became a hot director after that giving genuine blockbusters like Kalyanaraman, Thommanum Makkalum, Mayavi, Chocolates and the latest Marykondoru Kunjaadu.

Coming to the basic outline of the story, it is all about Balu(Jayaram) who is bank-rapt and does not know how to repay his debt to money lenders. Soorya (Sheela) is Balu's lover and escapes with him just before her wedding day and due to certain circumstances, she becomes a film actress ‘Anamika’ and Balu has to do the role of a makeup man. What follows is the usual twist and turns and ends on a happy note.

Similar to Shafi’s previous works, Makeup Man also has some genuine moments to evoke laughter but everything turns out to be easily predictable towards the later part. The movie is a watchable fare because of one reason- Shafi’s narration and he proved once again why he is a director who knows the pulse of today’s audience.

Jayaram is back to conquer family audience with another tailor-made innocent role and a big thanks to Shafi for utilizing Jayaram in the likable form he is known for. Sheela who made a forgettable debut in Malayalam with Mayabazzar and following it with a torture like Thanthonni, does a commendable job in the role of a sweet and helpless actress.

Suraj brings the house down with terrific one-liners and Siddique comes up with another excellent performance as a cunning master director.Janardhanan, Salim Kumar, Jagathy were fine while Kunjako Boban & Pritviraj does cameos as themselves in the movie.

Sachi-Sethu’s screenplay is strictly average and is below their previous works in Chocolates and Robinhood. There are many illogical and dragging scenes but how these loopholes are filled is undoubtedly because of Shafi’s fast paced direction as the viewers forget everything and comes out happily out of theaters. Vidayasagar’s songs are melodious and background score is apt. Editing could have been better and it needs urgent trimming of about 10 minutes especially in the mid of second half.

Overall, Makeup Man entertains and it is definitely a one-time watch if you don’t expect anything big.

Verdict: Watchable
