‘Kutti Sranku- The Sailor of Hearts’, which is another attempt from Director Shaji N Kumar deviating from the mainstream movies, has been lying in the cans for a long time. After being screened in numerous film festivals, finally Kutti Sranku graced into theatres today and as expected it is another typical off-beat movie with Mammootty in the lead role.
The movie starts off with local police discovering a dead body near the sea-shore and 3 ladies- Revamma (Padmapriya), Pemenna( Kamalini Mukherje) and Kali (Meena Kumari) comes to identify and claims it as Kutti Sranku. Who is he and what is his relationship with them forms the rest of movie.
Shaji N Karun has narrated the story unfolded in three flashback sequences which shows the life of Sranku with each of the ladies and why he is forced to move from one place to another. The part which had Mammootty and Kamalini Mukherjee sharing the screen space forms the most interesting piece of moments in the movie.
It is the bold performances from the lead artists that form the biggest positive with Mammootty donning three different gets up. It was not a challenging role as expected, but Mammootty was able to put up a good show and performed it with ease. Among the heroines, Kamalini Mukherjee impresses the most while Padmapriya and Meena Kumari were fine. All of the supporting casts including Suresh Krishna, Siddique, Saikumar and rest were perfect.
Shaji N Karun’s script and direction was just good as needed for off-beat subjects, but he was successful to maintain a descent pace throughout the movie. Background score, sound mixing and cinematography need a special mention considering the technical aspects. The beautiful backwaters have been brilliantly captured and cinematographer completely deserves an award for his splendid work.
Overall, Kutti Sranku is a strict NO for mass audience as it does not have anything to appeal them. With a duration lasting for around 2.15 hours, it is a descent watch for serious film buffs.
Verdict: Good
