There is a natural honesty about the plot of the film Elsamma Enna Aankutty, but things look a bit far-fetched, with a weak script and a rather old fashioned narration. There are very few film-makers who leave their stamp on every creation of theirs and director Lal Jose is one of them. The subject is not fresh or new but still it leaves a mark

Elsamma (Ann) is quite a tomboy, distributing newspapers and dealing with wrong-doers in her capacity as the local reporter of a daily. She is friendly with Unnikrishnan (Kunchacko Boban), a milk vendor whom she has named Paalunni. He loves her but never has the courage to reveal his feelings for her. There are quite a few characters in the film, which are caricatures of any such village. Like the landlord Kunnel Pappan (Nedumudi Venu), tea stall owner Balan Pillai (Janardhanan), a hooch trader (Vijayaraghavan), a marriage broker (Suraj Venjarammoodu), a Panchayat member (Jagathy Sreekumar) and so on.

The story soon takes a different turn with the arrival of Pappan’s grandson Eby (Indrajith) and his friends, from the city. What happens after the arrival of the city dwellers is what forms the rest of the climax. Lal Jose has this incredible skill to make even the most modest of scripts look appealing on screen. He does that without fail this time as well, and the ambience of a hillside hamlet is brilliantly built up.

Ann Augustine who has done the title role is surprisingly confident in her essayal of Elsamma, and makes an extremely promising debut. Kunchacko Boban is tremendously comfortable playing the local dairyman while Indrajith looks and acts the city dweller to perfection. The storyline is too predictable, often melodramatic and things happen at a leisurely pace. There is nothing much different in the way the central character has been conceived by Sindhuraj, and this is where the film falters big time.
Sindhuraj's script keeps shifting from being moderately steady at the beginning of the films to intermittently shaky towards the middle and continuously wobbly towards the climax. The culmination of it all, when Elsamma takes the big decisions of her life comes without as much as the slightest whimper. It all gets pretty much quiet towards the end.

The film suffers from a script that is a cumbersome blend of drama and some unsettling moments, which gradually become tiresome as the film trudges to a close. Therefore the tale that Elsamma tries to tell is neither worthy of the top-notch performers in it nor the fine director at its helm.

Verdict: Family Entertainer
