Dhrona 2010

The Film directed by Shaji Kailas was supposed to be a thriller; Drona 2010 was anything but a thriller. Drona 2010 is about two wealthy families involved in a feud for generations. The spooky part occurs when Kunjunni (Mammootty), who trades ancestral buildings, gets interested in a property that is supposed to be haunted. Ah! Well a protagonist that he is enters the house soon to be killed by the evil spirit in the bungalow.

Enter Mammotty’s second avatar, Kunjunni’s elder brother, chanting mantras with rugged stubble and flowing locks. He vows to avenge his sibling's death by killing the spirit that resides in the house.The spirit of Savitri (Dhanya) on the other hand has an old score to settle with the Pattazhi family and proves to be a hard nut to crack. So, we see extended rituals, explanation of Vastu and a lot of other things. And, making an effort to give rational justifications to the supernatural happenings in the end proves to be a huge damper.

The only thing that worked for Drona 2010 was Mammotty’s presence. A stale script and an inapt handling by Shaji Kailas. If the first half was a lackluster affair the latter part of the movie was even dreary.  Mammootty as Kunjunni is the conventional hero in designer sunglasses who handles humour and action well. While Mammotty part two loses the charm towards the end as he has to be continually loud.Thilakan, the old war horse shows some screen presence.Manoj K Jayan is louder than he usually is.

Kaniha is pretty ok in an immature character for the first time, while Dhanya, as the spooky spirit is noticeable. Navya Nair as the shlok chanting Mammotty’s wife grabs the most attention amidst the female cast.If  Shaji thought a change in title (from Drona to Drona 2010) could bring him luck, then one hopes that he learns from this flick to first work on his skills than put more effort on having a superstitious title. So there you go, Drona 2010 gets 1 star for the director's hard work on the title part and Mammotty's presence earns the flick another one..
