The director-scriptwriter team of Joshi & Sibi K Thomas-Udayakrishna who created the biggest multi-starrer “Twenty Twenty” are back with another big-budget multi-starrer in the form of Christian Brothers. Well the makers had only one plan in doing this movie- just to entertain the audience and present their favorite stars in the most likable format.
There is nothing new with the story-line and more importance was given to the screenplay which forms the critical part in such movies. The basic theme revolves around rivalry between two families, the central character Christi(Mohanlal) getting mistaken as the culprit of a crime by his father( Saikumar) and Christi becoming a don as well as an under-cover savior in Mumbai after he is forces to leave his house. There are numerous characters and the script-writers somehow manage to link each of them at some point of time.
Christi returns to Kochi to save Meenakshi (Kavya Madhavan) from a kidnappers group and the real dhamaka starts here with the arrival of Suresh Gopi as a cop, Sharath Kumar as another don and Dileep as Kavya’s lover in the later half. How Christi plays along with them and other baddies and proves his innocence to his father forms the rest of movie.Mohanlal as Christi steals the show and gets enough opportunities with thundering dialogs and heroism to score and thrill the viewers. A welcome comeback for Mohanlal in a typical mass hero to satisfy his faithful fans who were eagerly waiting to see him in such kind of a role. Suresh Gopi does his usual police officer role with ease and once proved whenever he wore a uniform, the performance would be up. Dileep and Sharath Kumar has limited screen space but they were perfect in their respective roles.
Kaniha, Kavya Madhavan, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy and Lakshmi Rai plays the female characters and they delivered what was expected except Lakshmi Rai who was totally unwanted and appears only for songs as Mohanlal’s lady love. There are many character artist and Saikumar, Vijaya Radhavan, Biju Menon impressed the most. It was irritating to watch Suraj’s buffoonery and if he does not change his typical style, mallus will ignore this comic star very soon.
What would one generally expect from the hit script-writers Sibi K Thomas & Udayakrishna- not something which will be remembered as evergreen movies? Even though the screenplay reminds you of umpteen numbers of other movies, the main positive is high voltage of mass masala entertainment are available in plenty. It can’t be better than any other Director than Joshi to direct this multi-starrer and Christian Brothers is another feather to his cap. Deepak Dev’s music was strictly average, while Rajamani’s BGM added to the high energy level and maintained the thrilling factor right till the end. Ranjan Abraham’s editing was fine but 10-15 minutes of trimming in the mid of second half is required as the movie lagged and went out of control during this time.
Overall, Christian Brothers is a festival entertainer and will go down well with the vacation audience. Leave your brains at home and just enjoy the fascinating play of multi-starrers simply rocking the screen.
