Successful directors like Lal Jose, Anwar Rasheed, Blessy, Vyshak etc had their debut venture with Mammootty and there is always an anxiety among film buff when Mammootty joins in hands with a debut Director. Well in Best Actor, it's photographer turned director Martin Prakatt's luck and he has grabbed the golden opportunity to the fullest.
Best Actor is all about a school master Mohan(Mammootty), who leads a happy family life with his wife and son but his ultimate goal is to become a film actor. The first half revolves around Mohan's attempt to showcase his talent, unfortunately all of them result in vain but it takes a twist just before the interval. From there, it's a roller coaster ride of events that leads to an unexpected climax.
What works in favor is undoubtedly the fresh theme and wonderful packaging. When one of the best actor in India is there in the lead role, Director Martin Prakkat utilized Mammootty the actor as well as the star to the fullest, hence making the movie appealing to all kinds of audience. If the first half belongs to family audience, then second half is for youth and climax will cater to everyone.
After receiving critical acclaim for Pranchiyetan, Mammootty comes up with another excellent performance as an aspiring actor in Best Actor. Be it the innocence of Mohan asking for a chance that would touch your heart or at the same time the style that would create a rage among youth, you can't take your aways off him. Lal, Nedumudi Venu, Salim Kumar, Vinayakan provided the ample supporting roles while heroine Sruthi, KPAC Lalitha, Sukumari, Biju Kuttan had limited screen space.
Martin Prakkat makes a promising debut as Director and has a bright future if he is choosy. Bipin Chandran's screenplay had a good flow and there is never a dull moment with fine editing by DonMax. Ajayan Vincent's cinematography is apt while Bijipal's music and BGM blended well with the movie.
Overall, Best Actor is a genuine attempt from Martin Prakkat which takes on a fresh subject and with Mammootty rocking the screen, this is your perfect Christmas vacation outing.
