Yet another half year in Malayalam cinema, the low budget wonders outshines their bigger counterparts in the box office battle. Till June 2011, 32 Malayalam films have been released and except ‘Seniors’ no other film is a big hit. The films like ‘Make Up Man’ of Jayaram, ‘Traffic’ by debutant Rajesh Pillai and to some extent Prithivi Raj’s ‘Urumi’ did well and M.Mohan’s Manikyakallu reaching 50 days has come to a safety point.
Content seems to have overtaken currency, so to say. Trade analysts feel that the lifelines of the Malayalam film industry are these small budget films which are a safer bet for all parties involved - producers, distributors and theater owners. A close look at the recent trend reveals many interesting facts. Though not all the movies made on low budgets strike a chord with the masses, most films that did wonders at the box office are from this category, feel analysts.
The success of ‘Traffic’ directed by Rajesh Pillai, exemplified that there is room for everybody. Crowds just enjoyed every bit of the film.even in the absence of Super stars or any masala elements. The collections of ‘Seniors’ are stable at the box-office. The film is running in jam-packed houses with support from all kind of audience. ‘Make Up Man’, directed by Shafi also did well at the box-office. The film garnered the attention of the youth and family in a big way.
M Mohan directed film with Prithyraj in the lead role ‘Manikyakallu’ is getting good response and in the hit list. Multi star movies -Rafi Mecartins 'China Town' and Joshey's 'Christian Brothers' are chance to breakeven in long run because of huge opening and different rights. The biggest disappointments were Mammootty's ‘Doubles' and 'August 15'. his latest release 'The Train' also failed to attract audience.
Jayasoorya's 'Janapriyan' is doing well at the box office and will definitely be profitable to producer. Films like Priyanandanan's 'Bhakthajanamgalude Sradhakku' and 'Melvilasam' by Ramdas manged to get good response but failed at the box office. The rough investment of nearly thirty five Malayalam films in the last 6 months is around 60 crores. The 27 failure films gross loss comes to around 30 crores says the film pundits in Capital City.
