Box-office of 2011 was filled with new debutant makers, fresh face actors, and many new attempts. Surprisingly, almost all of those were working magic at the box-office collection. A lot of biggies fell hopelessly and many unexpected turnouts super hits. In short, it was the year of fresher’s and fresh ideas, however, biggies too had their share of okay shows.
Top five profitable movies that saved the industry from disasters in 2011
1. 'Seniors': Helmed by Vyshakha, the fun film with an ensemble cast, including Jayaram, Kunchakko Boban, Manoj K Jayan, Biju Menon and Padma Priya, kicked off with waiting queues at the ticket counters. Made at a budget of Rs.3.5 crore, it managed to rake in around Rs.12 crore at the domestic box office and is still running with B centers.
2. 'Salt N Pepper': Director Ashique Abu offered the laugh riot as a treat. It opened to a slow start, but picked up gradually, thanks to word of mouth. Starring Lal, Asif Ali, Sweth Menon, and Mythili, it grossed Rs.10 crore out of its about 2.5 crore investment.
3. 'Traffic':- An unexpected success and the first hit of the year, the movie proved that content rules at the box office. Made on a shoe-string budget of Rs.2.5 crore, producer Listin Stephen managed to earn Rs.9 crore gross in kerala Boxoffice. Director Rajesh Pillai's film had Vineeth Sreenivasan, Kunchakko Boaban and Asif Ali in the lead roles.
4. 'Rathi Nirvedam': It was neither a run-of-the-mill love story, nor an expensive film. Also, the film had an unusual lead pair – Sweatha Menon and Sreejith(New Face). But it managed to hit bull's eye. Made on a low budget of Rs.1.2 crore vis-a-vis its banner that is Revathy Kalamandir, Veteran director T.K. Rajeevekumar's film collected Rs.6 crore in kerala.
