Halfyear boxoffice Analysis
Malayalam Film Industry is shining brightly at the Box-office as never before. From the beginning of the year 2010, the results of the films have been favorable to many. In the first six months 35 films were released and eight of them went on to become hits at the box-office. Even the films made on a small or big budget did not disappoint the audience. The five outright winners have been Pokkiri Raja, Happy Husbands, In Ghost house Inn, Pappy Appacha and chattampinadu were the few movies that had a decent run this half year.
Films like Dileep's Body Guard, Mohanlal’s Ividam Swargamanu,Jayram starrer kadha Thudarunnu, and Kunchakko-Archana starrer Mummy & me were the few movies that had an Average run this half year.
The year started on a bright note with ‘Happy Husbands’ has a great run at the box-office. The film had Jayaram, Jayasury, Indrajith in the lead roles and was directed by Saji Surendran. What turned the tide in its favor was the screenplay by Krishna Poojapura. It collected over Rs.10 crores, making it the biggest hit in the career of Jayaram.

Producer turned Director Lal’s film ‘In Ghost house Inn’, also turned out to be a Super hit at the box-office. For those who never predicted a long run for the film, will be apparently surprised by the movie celebrating 100 days in more than five plus centers.
‘Pappy Appacha’, directed by Mammas Chandra also did well at the box-office. The film garnered the attention of the family in a big way. The performance of Dileep in the film was applauded by one and all.
The film ‘Pokiri Raja’, starring Mammootty & Prithvi is creating records everywhere. The Movie is the biggest grosser so far. According to market sources, the collections of the film may cross Rs.20 crores in long run. The Usual Masala backdrop, Mass presence of Mammootty, Dialogues, Characterization and Freshness of the movie had the audience in a daze.

The collections of ‘Mummy and Me are stable at the box-office. The film is running to above average collection and the family crowds from day one are lapping up the film. Dileep starrer ‘Body Guard’ is had an average run at the box-office. Man with the Midas touch Sathyan Anthikadu film ‘Kadha Thudarunnu’ was an average run right from the start.
All, the above-mentioned films, were made on a small to medium budgets except Pokkiri Raja. The distributors are laughing all the way to the bank, because these films earned them handsome returns at the box-office.
The biggest flops in the half year includes ‘Alexander The Great’, ‘Janakan’, Dhorna2010’, ‘Pramani’, ‘Aagathan’, and ‘Thanthonni’. All the above films were believed to do some wonders to the industry and the careers of the respective stars.
The star mostly affected by this flop run is Mohanlal who have just completed his list of three flops. Suresh Gopi too is at the lower end of his career graph with his Janakan', not even fetching an average opening. So is the case of Suresh Gopi whose recent movie 'Ring Tone', also flopped. Dileep also had a disturbing six months with ‘Aagathan' and the big budgeted 'Body Guard’ and finally he escaped scathe free with his super hits Pappy Appacha.

The big problems with these sinking films are that the movies don't pick up at any point of its run, if it gets an initial bad word of mouth. With the lack of newsprint advertisements, due to some pressure from producers associations, no film is able to return to glory, if written off in its first week. The people really don't seem to believe in increased television advertisements and discussions which boost every film as the best.
The actors who survived the bad tide seems to be Mammootty , Jayaram, Dileep,Prithviraj and jayasurya, who saved themselves by only appearing in some sure bets, sometimes even in supporting roles, like the one that jayasurya has done in 'Happyhusbands'. All in all, it was an outstanding first half for the Malayalam Film Industry. The second half is being looked at with bated breath. Second half of the year is very crucial for the Mollywood cinema. If it turns out as big as the first half, then there is no looking back for the Malayalam Cinema in the days to come.
